Well - what a weekend! Saturday 2nd August saw the return of the Knoydart Games - an alternative highland games event that unfortunately we were unable to host last year due to the terrible weather. We wanted to make an extra effort this year to resurrect the Games, and were delighted to be able to take them back down to Long Beach.
The volunteers and organisers worked hard to put together another fun line-up of events: kids races, bungee run, raft race and obstacle course; as well as putting on the more 'serious' events including the hill race, and the infamous tug-o-war. The weather looked hopeful in the morning with the sun peeking out, but as usual the rain started the moment the boats arrived from Mallaig! The turnout was fantastic (a huge thank you to Knoydart Seabridge and Western Isles Cruises for putting on extra runs from Mallaig to bring everyone over), we had local lass Maja who goes in to nursery this year open the Games, and the beach was filled with cheers, laughter, blethering, and towards the end screaming when the Men's tug-o-war between Mallaig and Knoydart commenced - congrats to the Mallaig men on their win, and the Knoydart lads for putting up a good fight!
The afternoon flew by and once the last boats had left the pier and the beach had been cleared up we had a few hours to dry off, relax and get ready before a fantastic gig in Inverie Village Hall with the mighty Breabach. The hall was packed to capacity, and luckily the heat from inside seemed to discourage the midges from making an appearance. We sang and danced away in to the wee small hours, and there were definitely a lot of sore heads the next morning.
All in all, it was a brilliant day and we have to once again say a massive thank you to all the volunteers, organisers and attendees for coming together to make it a Games to remember. Roll on next year!
